Link Building

Proven Link Popularity Techniques to Promote your Web Site

For those of us who run web sites; we know the importance of a strong link building campaign. The campaign you build does not have to be exactly like everyone else's. The main thing is that the result of your campaign produces a lot of Quality links pointing to your web site or blog.

When it comes down to it there are only two primary factors in the success of your web site and they are as much quality unique content as you can possibly create and as many quality incoming links as you can possibly obtain.

The content part is self explanatory but your link building campaign can be ran one of several ways. The best way is to come up with a solid plan. You need to have a schedule that you know you can uphold at least 95 percent of the time. You must realize that a couple links pointing to your site every month will not cut it. Try to spend at least a half hour every day link building. If this is not possible for your daily schedule then implement it into your weekly schedule. Maybe you can squeeze in three solid hours a week strictly seeking quality link partners.

Without getting into great detail I will tell you the most common effective link building strategies:

Reciprocal Linking: This is probably the most common link building technique used. Finding quality web sites that are relevant to yours and requesting a link exchange is a pretty easy feat. Most webmasters are happy to exchange links with other quality relevant sites.

In a nutshell this is how reciprocal linking works. You do a google search on the main keyword of your web site. Open every page and look for a 'link to us' link or 'add url' if the site does not have one but you think it would be a good opportunity navigate to the 'contact us' link and send them an email. This is a good example of what a reciprocal link exchange request should look like:

Hello,

I came across your site when searching for 'keyword' on Google. Your site is very informational and I feel it would be a good resource for my viewers. I run a web site at http://yoursite.com and I would like to request a link exchange. If you are at all interested please let me know and I will add your link ASAP. My linking details are:

Title: Make Money Online
Description:
Proven ways to Make Money Online and start your very own Home Business. Learn the Secrets and avoid the scams.
URL:
http://ez-onlinemoney.com

Thank you for your time,
John Doe

It would be a good idea to use this or come up with your own request and use it as a template. Save it to a notepad document and copy and paste every time you find a good site to request a link from.

Although this is a very effective technique, it can bite you in the butt if done improperly. There are many webmasters that have the linking game figured out. This means they know the loopholes and will try scandalous techniques to somehow get a free link from you. Keeping this in mind, here are a few things you want to look out for when requesting a reciprocal link from another web site.

Take a look at their link page. If they do not have one then they probably do not accept link exchanges anyway. If they do you want to make sure that it is no more than two clicks from their front page, one click away is the best. This is situational though, if the link page has a good pagerank then it is still beneficial, you just have to play this one site by site.

Make sure the links on their link page do not have 'no follow' tags. You can check this in internet explorer by clicking on the 'view' tab at the top left of the page and then selecting 'source'. These tags stop the SE spiders from crawling that link making it useless to you. Never rely on the traffic you will get from each page as you probably will not get much from a link page. The main advantage is that the SE's see your link on other pages therefore increasing your popularity in the SERP's.

A good link should look like this <a href="http://www.site.com">Site</a> a bad link with the 'nofollow' tag in it looks like this <a href="http://www.site.com" rel="nofollow" >Site</a>

One-Way Linking - These are the most beneficial types of links you can get. A good link building campaign should have some type of one-way linking built in. These are links on other web sites that you do not have a link to. In other words they put your link on their web site but you do not put theirs on yours. This is not something that you want to do in order to trick others by telling them you will place theirs on your site. These are normally acquired by articles that you right and allow others to post to their site along with a link to your site and by other webmasters offering your link because it is a valuable resource. One of the most effective ways to get one-way links to your site is by Submitting Articles to article directories. In a very close second is submitting your web site link to Web Directories.

Triangular Linking - This is a link building technique where site a places a link to site b, site b then places a link to site c and site c completes the triangle by placing a link to site a. If you think of this in a diagram you will see that each site receives a one-way link. As I mentioned above one-way links are more valuable than reciprocal links because you receive a link pointing to your site without giving one in return.

Although this technique seems like reciprocal linking it is not since you are giving a link to one site and receiving from another. In most cases this is beneficial but if your site is much more popular than the site you are receiving a link from it may not be so good.

Although there are others; above are the three most popular link building techniques that have proven to be valuable.

What to Look Out For When Link Building

Link Farms - As I mentioned above there are many people who try to abuse the valuable technique of link building. One of the worst things you can do when finding linking partners is to reciprocate with a link farm. A link farm is a site in which someone has thousands and thousands of reciprocal links as their entire content. These are NOT to be confused with Web Directories (link directories) which are nicely organized and built as a search resource. Link farms are normally un-organized and ugly. The best thing to do when you think a site may be one is to avoid it.

Non-Relevant Sites - As link pages or resource pages are built as a secondary resource for your visitors it is not a good idea to link with non-relavant sites. Putting a link on your site that has nothing to do with the topic of your site will not only be useless to the recip partner your link on their site will be useless to yours. This will normally not hurt your rankings but it does you absolutely no good.

Link Building Services - There are many services out there that promise all kinds of links to your site for a low price. SOME of these can prove to be valuable but you have to be careful. Most of these sites were created with good intentions but because of all of the scandalous people out there that try to take short cuts in everything these services do not provide much value. If you do decide to go with one of these services be sure to keep all of the above tips in mind.
