The Importance of White Space when Writing Articles and Copy

June 26th, 2007 | 3 comments

We all know that writing for the web is much different than writing for magazines etc.

I’ve tried to write my content in small, easy to digest chunks. I didn’t think much of it until I wrote the sells letter for Article Marketing Domination and had it reviewed by Eric Louviere.

Eric kept pointing about that there wasn’t enough white space. It was actually very repetitive when he was doing the critique.

I thought, “yeah yeah I know” thinking it wasn’t THAT big of a deal.

I did break up the paragraphs to make him happy :) and guess what, my sales conversions increased by 50% that’s a HUGE increase in conversion.

Since then I’ve really been concentrating on creating as much white space in my content as possible without it looking “unnatural.”

It’s just one of those small things that many people do not may enough attention to.

    Good point Joshua.

Claude Hopkins wrote a book over 80 years ago titled “Scientific Advertising” which is a very interesting read.

In the old days it was considered bad money management to waste white space that you were paying for in the ad.

Not so today. Everything from advertising, to email marketing, to ebooks, and website copy all look better and are easier to read because of white space.

    Thanks Jeff,

Great to hear from you by the way.

“White Space” is one of those things that can make a huge difference but so few people really understand it’s importance.

Like I said above, it wasn’t until recently that the concept really hit me. I know it was a good thing but never put any thought into it.

I think you’re totally right, Joshua. That’s something I had to learn over time, the hard way. I think white space is key because most internet users just like to skim.
