Good Bye Akismet Hello Spam Karma 2
April 6th, 2008 | 14 commentsAfter using Akismet for nearly a year, never spamming any blogs and being put into Akismet hell for the second time, I’ve decided it’s time to get rid of Akismet and go with a more mature spam fighting tool, Spam Karma 2.
I received an email this morning from a good friend of mine, Caroline Middlebrook asking if the comment she recently left was put into the Akismet filter and it was. … [edited at the request of a reader]… I know she would never spam anyone.
Anyway, that’s a good example of how ineffective Akismet really is. So after Andy’s recent decision to drop Akismet and go with Spam Karma, Caroline’s experience and my own experiences I’ve decided to finally give SK2 a shot.
I literally activated the plugin minutes ago, but I can’t imagine it being as ineffective as Akismet.
We’ll see. What are you’re experiences with Spam Karma? Do you like it?

If you use the additional Akismet filter plugin for Spam Karma you actually get the best of both worlds, a halfway house with Akismet adding only a small penalty to a comment and not being the ultimate authority.

Thanks Andy, I’ll take a look, wasn’t aware of that.

No Akismet issues here..yet. What exactly is Akismet hell?

Though I only get a moderate number of comments on a blog with decent traffic, I’ve had only good results with Akismet.
It catches all the v–gra, porn, poker, etc., comments, but has only made a handful of “mistakes”

@ Dennis & Michael - You will later on down the road.
Dennis, “akismet hell” is just my made-up phrase for their spam filter.

Rats, I was going to leave a snarky response about how it didn’t work to well but you deleted the “quick money” spam post LOL

lol Yeah, how bad did that look huh?
It doesn’t seem to be working out too great now. I think I’ll be going with the option Andy pointed out above.

I use a slightly different option which is slightly more time consuming, with all but the most frequent comments and trackback sources going into moderation. It works ok for me because I do like to visit the blogs of people who leave comments, plus I am a little picky about whose comments remain on the blog… and get sent by email to people (when I have Subscription running)

It is so frustrating when I take the time to leave responsible comments on blogs and they never show up!
I don’t blame the owners of the blogs, because often these people just don’t have the time to edit their Akismet file.

Mark - I know how that feels coming from the owner perspective. I just recently apologized to a commenter as a few of his got caught for about a week before I noticed.
Josh - I woulda checked the background on that comment…it seemed a little TOO ironic lol

So far I have only had good karma from akismet! I just compare my experience of blogging before akisment…I would not be without it.

I hadn’t heard about this problem before. I swear by Akismet and it has saved me from some 20,000 spam comments in the last year. I don’t know if that is a lot compared to most or if I am getting off lightly.
I set all comments to be moderated and Askimet seemed to be doing an excellent job.
Now I am starting to wonder if they were all spam or not but I usually just have a quick browse theough the first page of so and they are all junk comments so I delete the lot.
Have you noticed an improvement with Spam Karma?
10th April, 2008 at 6:39 pm
I haven’t had any real issues yet either, but yes you do need to check it…some legit comments will get caught.
10th April, 2008 at 6:47 pm
@ Andy - Yeah, I’m not looking to spend too much time on it. With that being said I probably should be complaining about it either. Just hoping to find a better alternative than Akismet…we’ll see.
@ Mark - Yeah, but if those people can’t invest 1 minute out of their day to rescue legit comments they probably shouldn’t be blogging in the first place. That’s not directed toward anyone in particular, but it’s just really not that time consuming. However, Akismet should improve their system so legit comments don’t end up there in the first place.
@ Dennis - nah, just deleted it lol
@ Alex - I have to admit overall it is useful, it’s just the fact that alot of good comments get filtered that I don’t like.
@ Sid - I’ll be honest with you…I haven’t seen an improvement with SK. But it offers ALOT of configuration, so I’d imagine if I were to really get technical with it, it could be configured to do very well.
Right now I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m probably going to go back to Akismet for the time being until I can come up with the best possible configuration for SK.
