New Selective DoFollow Plugin
September 8th, 2007 | 5 commentsThe reason I recently started using the DoFollow plugin to strip the rel=”nofollow” attribute out of comments was to reward those of you who regularly contribute and add to the conversation.
That’s the pro and these the the cons:
1. It invites comment spam (Not too big of a deal, Akismet filters most and the rest I can delete)
2. It invites one-time commentors, who do contribute to the conversation, but in my opinion don’t deserve a link. That may sound harsh, but I would like to preserve my PR and distribute it back into the blog and to those who regularly contribute. “Regularly contribute” being the key phrase here.
In order to fix this problem, and to increase the “link juice” back to the blog and to those who regularly contribute, I’ve just installed and activated the “Lucia’s Linky Love” plugin.
With this plugin, one time commenters get a nofollow. They get a dofollow after they’ve posted at least 3 comments. You’ll also notice there is a comment count next to each commenter as well. This is part of the plugin and I think it’s a great addition.
So if you want to take advantage of the increased link juice, start commenting now and contribute to the conversation ![]()

Great plugin. I may install it myself. I’m using one that automatically strips the nofollow out of every post. But I like this one a lot better.

I also installed this plug-in to reward my reader and get more comments as well.

Brent, I guess you’re using the dofollow plugin then? It’s a great plugin and you won’t leak too much PR if you have enough internal links on each page but I thought I’d just play it on the safe side and nofollow one-time commenters and reward those of you who continually contribute.

Yeah, I am using the dofollow plugin. I’ll probably switch to this one. It just makes more sense.
I’m fairly new to blogging and some spam has got past me a few times. I got a comment a few weeks ago that said, “I really enjoyed reading your post . I didn’t understand everything, but I’ll have to read up on it.
I couldn’t figure out what was so hard to understand, but it seemed legit to me so I approved it. A few days ago, I got the exact same comment for another post. That’s when I realized the first comment was spam. So for the last 3 weeks, I’ve been giving some spammer a free link. It makes a good case for using the plugin you are using.

Manual comment spam is getting worse these days. These guys legitimately find your blog, and they normally aren’t using software etc., but it’s still spam. If it’s iffy I normally just delete their link altogether. I mean, if the comment doesn’t even mention the topic of the post, they normally don’t deserve a link.
Another good reason to nofollow those who don’t regularly contribute is to prevent linking to bad neighborhoods.
