Free Blog Review #3 - ThomasSinfield dot com

January 21st, 2008 | 3 comments

Free Blog Review I’ve admittedly been slacking on the free blog reviews I offered a while back, so this is as good a time as any to do #3.

This review is of ThomasSinfield.com and my initial as well as overall thoughts of the blog are positive.

I noticed several things I really liked:

1. Great theme. I’m not sure if it’s custom or not, but I haven’t seen it around. Looks great!

2. I love the “latest news” section! That’s actually something I personally requested for my new theme, which you may or may not be viewing right now. I think it’s great to have the option of releasing a small blurb without writing a new post for it.

3. Great internal linking. Loads of internal links on every page, which provides multiple routes for the spiders as well as the visitor.

4. Frequent posts

5. The about page addresses the blog and the author, just like it should. Many bloggers go with either one or the other. When it’s a personalized blog on a specialized niche it should address both and Thomas has done that.

6. SEO friendly Permalink structure

I could dig deeper and I’m sure I’d find more things I liked, but those were a few I noticed right away.

I also found a few things I would change:

1. Authority is being given away to:

- “Money Makers” in the header
- Sponsors
- Recent Comments list
- Top Commentators list
- Friends
- My BANS Sites

Every one of these links appear on every single post. I would either nofollow all that are possible or remove them. I’d also DEFINITELY nofollow the advertise and contact pages as well as all of the affiliate links without question!

But with the multiple internal links spread all over, as mentioned above, it should retain much of the authority that would have been given away. I still think it’s over-done a little and I would personally reduce it a little.

2. Thomas is also selling a report. I would either:

- Stop selling it and require opt-in in order to build a mailing list (This is something I’ll be doing in the next month on my blog.)

- Stop selling it and require an RSS subscription in order to download. Similar to how Michael does it at his Blog Consulting Blog.

- Continue selling it and write another report in order to build a list or increase RSS subscribers.

3. I would get rid of the archives, but that’s just me. I think they’re worthless and only create duplicate content, but I realize loads of people would argue that. That’s just a personal opinion of mine.

4. Currently the robots.txt is reading:

User-agent: * Disallow:

It wouldn’t hurt to restrict some directories etc. that don’t need to be crawled. Anyone can feel free to view my robots.txt and/or read my in-depth robots.txt guide.

Overall it’s a pretty good blog. Great job Thomas!

    Hey Josh.

thanks so much for the review. The theme is a unique one! You have brought up some interesting points and I will definitely look at changing a few things.

I like his header a lot. And he has a nice energetic presentation. I don’t generally frequent “make money online” blogs, so i can’t comment that much on the content, as I’m not the target audience.

And there’s some sort of alignment problem (at least as displayed in Firefox) in his “My Most Popular Posts” section.

@ Thomas - No problem at all, Thomas. Great job with your blog.

@ Chuck - It is nice. I noticed the alignment problem as well and forgot to mention it; thanks for catching that.
