Being Helpful Invites Good Things - Another Example

May 14th, 2008 | 9 comments

Niche Internet MarketingI’ve always, always, always recommended being as honest and helpful as possible. The reason for this is because the old saying “What Goes Around Comes Around” is so very true…I’m reminded of this on a daily basis and could sit here for hours sharing situations where helping someone turned out to benefit me in the end.

In this business, believe it or not, if you’re totally honest, people will WANT to buy products through your affiliate links. If you promote every product under the sun that has a good affiliate program, people will purposely clear their cookies and buy through someone else’s.

If you hurt people you will be hurt. If you help people you will be helped!

Several months ago I was asked a few questions by Brent Crouch (Very smart fellow, I highly recommend subscribing to his blog,) who happens to run a very successful offline business. He does extremely well with his offline business, but lately he’s been looking to expand online.

He found my blog, liked what I had to say, so he took me on as a mentor.

I answered his questions and helped him as much as I possibly could. Not expecting anything in return, but because it was the right thing to do. We spoke on several occasions and still do to this day.

Soon after we became acquainted, he was interviewed by Leigh Burke, who was working on a new book, which is now available at Amazon called “NICHE Internet Marketing” and Brent gave me a very generous mention:

Leigh: Do you have any role models or mentors? If so, who are they, and how did you get them?

Brent: One of the guys I talk to most and share ideas with is Josh Spaulding of ez-onlinemoney.com. I met Josh by being a frequent commentor on his blog.

I have no idea how good this book is yet (will be reading it tomorrow) and it may or may not become a best seller, but it’s still very flattering to be mentioned in a “real” book :)

So, I wanted to reinforce my constant advice to he honest and helpful with this very “neat” situation.

    Hi Josh,

    Thanks for the post.

Out of all the bloggers and marketers that I have ran into, only two stick out that are in my estimation genuinely interested in helping others. That’s you and Monika Mundell.

There are tons out there interested in helping themselves. There are even a few out there that like to give the impression that they want to help others, but after a while I have the sense it’s all an act for their own benefit.

    What makes you different?

You’ve done a lot to help me in private when no one was looking asking for nothing in return. I think when you do good things for people, good things come back to you. It the ole, “you reap what you sew”.

I appreciate your blog and all the help you have given me. Big up to you my friend.

Brent brings up an excellent point about helping out in private, when nobody is looking. That is a perfect way to draw a line between those who help out of self interest and those who are simply helpful.

Josh has helped me “offline” as well, and I’m reminded how much more I need to do the same.

Congrats Josh and Brent - both of you have done excellent jobs!

Even though I don’t comment much on blogs - reading this was really wonderful….

    Hi Josh,

Congrats on the mention, good luck and hopefully more to follow once the book gets more exposure. I have always believed in what goes around comes around and you have proved that.

Brent, yes there are alot out there who don’t help others or just appear to want to help.

Excellent post Josh and congrats! I couldn’t agree more on a couple points here.

First, i think I’m still on ONE list of a “guru”, because as you say, they just fake it for the most part.

Private coaching…nuthin better! Although it can be a little disheartening when you spend HOURS with someone, to only see them do whatever they want anyway and then wonder why it STILL isn’t working.

Looks like you hit the proverbial jackpot in Brent, great job fellas; keep it rockin’!

    Hi Josh,

Brent pointed me in the direction of your blog.
It was a pleasure having you in my new book :)

I hope you enjoy the read!

I have another couple of books coming out this year and will be looking for contributions from professionals as yourself - drop me a line if you have time to get involved.

    Regards,

    Leigh Burke.

Thanks for all of the very kind comments everyone. Greatly appreciated. I’m glad I’ve been able to help!

@ Leigh - The pleasure is all mine. So far (I’ve just started reading) it’s an excellent book and I’m sure it will do well, but whether it does or not It’s pretty neat to be mentioned and greatly appreciated.

I’ve been pondering the idea of writing my own, so this has given me a little more motivation.

I’d be happy to contribute to your upcoming publications in any way.

    Thanks for stopping by!
