Best Article Directories, Frequently Updated and Ranked

August 12th, 2008 | 26 comments

article directory listI just wanted to write a quick post announcing the new Article Directory List that Mark Mason has just put together.

As you may know, I recommend splitting up your article submissions, but submitting half to the top 5 or so article directories and the other half to the top 30 or so. This gives you the best of both worlds, as your limited submissions will typically rank a bit higher and your “mass” submission will bring in more links to your site/pages.

I announced a list of the top 15 article directories in my opinion a while back, but never had announced a list that goes beyond that.

Mark Mason has at http://www.masonworld.com/masonworld-article-directory-rank/

This is a list, which unlike most other article directory lists, is updated weekly, so you never have to wonder if any particular site still holds that ranking, as article directories frequently come and go.

If you like the list as much as I do, help Mark out by Stumbling it or voting for it in your favorite social bookmarking site. He’s a good guy and the list is the best out there, so it’s well deserved. :)

(* Keep in mind, this is a new list, so more lists will be added)

    Thanks for mentioning this Josh.

The list is in beta, and I would really appreciate feedback from your readers. I would like to make this the definitive article directory list on the internet.

    Thanks again, Mark

It looks good and will be very useful.

What are the criteria that are used to decide what gets into the list?

It would be very useful to have 1 more column where any special restrictions apply to the directory.

One of them had a strict policy against SEO articles and temporarily banned me because I wasn’t aware of that. Knowing this information up front would be great and would add greatly to the list.

    Hey Josh,
I am still confused on why we would submit articles more than once….doesn’t this create duplicate content in search engines which from what I’ve read could be bad for site rankings?

    Hi Ray,

There is no such thing as a duplicate content “penalty.” There are algorithmic variables, which will decrease the ranking of an article if it’s excessively duplicated (hundreds or thousands of times,) but exact text can and will rank on more than one site.

If duplicate content was filtered there wouldn’t be a single social bookmarking site ranking in SE’s etc. etc. etc.

The key is moderation. Submit to only the best article directories… that’s why a resource like Marks list is so valuable.

Thanks for the resource, I’m getting more and more into article marketing and this is great. I just bookmarked it and I’m sure will be on the website daily.

    Thanks again,

can someone provide detailed tested data on teh difference between submitting to 1 directory, vs 5, vs 30?

@ Ray - no problem, glad to help.

@ Article - Don’t have anything on hand, just years of experience. If you’re going to submit to 1 you might as well submit to 5. If you submit to 30 your article pages aren’t going to rank as high, but you’re going to receive more incoming links to your own pages.

A limited submission 1-10 will get your articles ranked higher, which is really where the true power article marketing comes into play. A larger distribution 30 or so will get you more incoming links and a crazy, stupid submission (hundreds or thousands) will waste your articles :)

@Computer Help — thanks for the suggestion. What I am hearing is that you are wishing there were “notes” for each directory that told you about important things for that directory.

I think that is a great idea, but things change so fast that I am worried about keeping something like that up to date. I will consider it however. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Regards,
    Mark

Instead of notes, how about symbols. For instance, if the directory uses the rel=”nofollow” attribute in the sig links, you have a “NF” symbol next to that directory. If the directory only allows text (and not html) in the sig, you have a “txt” symbol next to it etc.

And of course you would each symbol at the bottom with an explanation of their meanings.

Josh — that is a great idea.

One of the things I noticed about Article Directory lists out there is that they are all out of date. So, I am concerned about making sure that I do not create information that is not maintained automatically.

I’ll have to see what I can script.

    Great idea though, thanks!

Didn’t think about that, you’re right. May be difficult to come up with PHP code that detects each of those things. Oh well, something to ponder anyway.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks, Mark, for your list of article directories. It ought to be especially helpful to newbies. Although I tend to go with a small list of my own as far as submitting goes.

I’ve found more success getting articles listed in the SERPs using one major article directory, then submitting the same articles to four or five less prominent directories. Often, one of the less prominent directory articles gets ranked high on the SERPs also. Can’t complain about that!

Thanks for the list. YOu know what would be nice is if he would tell us if the links are “dofollow” or “nofollow”. I hear that some directories are doing the nofollow. I know, this is for traffic and not links, but still it would be nice to know right off of his list.
thanks and maybe you can pass it on.

    Hi Josh,

thanks for the update. From the looks of it, the top 5 article directories doesn’t really differ very much. I’m not so concerned with the rankings. As long as they are in the top 10 - it qualifies them enough to get my articles uploaded.

    Here is a quick tip:

    1. Go to the directory with the article
    2. Right mouse click on the links
    3. Click properties
    4. Check out the relationship - no follow/follow.

PS: Buzzle is a good site for traffic- slow to list articles and only 2 at a time- takes time but worth it….

Thanks for posting this resource. I recently started dangling my feet on Ezine and it has become clear to me that if your articles are good enough, to go viral, it can direct allot of traffic and PR to your site.

Thank you for sharing this list. So far I’ve been submitting my articles to GoArticles and Ezine Articles. But as I can see there are many more to go that I’ve not heard about.

Awesome link Josh. You know what would be great though. An article directory list with the minimum word requirement for articles the directory accepts. I know some say 500 which i barely ever write and others allow as little as 250. It would be nice to know that little piece of information!

    Hi Josh,

thanks for your post about Mark’s article directory list. I think I’ll need to get going on a couple here that I’ve been overlooking.

    Buzzle especially.

One question: How come iSnare is missing? From what I can tell, my articles get similar numbers of views as ezinearticles.com, albeit complementary, which is great since some articles that get many views with ezinearticles get few(er) with iSnare and vice versa. Ditto with some of the others. I’m especially fond of Amazines.com by the way, which is also performing quite well, and especially receptive to articles that the other two aren’t too big on.

One article that got hardly any views in either ezinearticles or iSnare has been a perennial best performer in Amazines!

Oh, about iSnare: Yeah, they actually charge, but it’s only a buck or two, i.e., not too bad, unless you’re a mass submitter, and it’s worth it to me for the exposure I think I’m getting, to the best I can tell anyway.

One additional request for info: There is at least one that won’t accept multiple submissions (but I forgot which one it was), and that’s something that should also be noted in lists of directories.

    Thanks again.

P.S.: Note to Paul: Thanks for the tip re checking for nofollow! That’s priceless!

    Mark,

Thanks for putting up the list.

    Couple of questions:

    1. How are the scores computed?

    2. The list has severak directories with a ‘0′ page rank. Is it worthwhile submitting to these?

    Thanks.

starting my own article directory now after making some good money on bum marketing. I actually never have heard of a few of those as I used GoArticles, Buzzle, and most of all Ezine.

Hey Josh — just wanted you to know that I added over 400 more directories to the list. Still in beta, but looking pretty cool.

Keep those stumbles and diggs coming!
