I’ve Failed over and over again, that is why I Succeed!
August 18th, 2009 | 17 commentsOne of the best and most frequent pieces of advice I offer to those who are trying to succeed at something, whether it’s Internet Marketing or something else, is to accept failure and understand that failure is part of success.
You will not find success with anything worth doing without first finding failure. In many cases you will fail multiple times. These failures are what prevent most people from being successful. Only a small percentage of people keep going when they fail. Those are the successful ones!
A few days ago I came across a blog post from Michelle Adams, who is a long-time member of my Private Forum and a very smart marketer and person in general. The post is titled, “Fail to Succeed” and it basically hits on the point I just mentioned, but applies it to the site flipping model, which she is successful in.
It’s an excellent post, as I stated in the comment field on her blog, but what I liked the most was the video she posted directly after the text.
It’s my Favorite Video of All Time!
This is a Nike Commercial featuring Michael Jordan, one of the best Basketball Players of all time (only surpassed by LeBron James) and it hits on EXACTLY what I’m always trying to tell people!

I think that is the perfect way to learn and succeed. You need to try until you get it. Greg Ellison

This commercial is from so long ago…but also one of my absolute favorites. I was just talking about it a couple of weeks ago – people don’t realize that in order to set yourself up for success, you have to fail…it’s just a matter of odds

this is the first time i seen that commercial… but its soooo true…. we all have to learn not to be afraid to fail… its all part of the process… thanks for the post… it just motivated me …

Josh you might not remember the few times I almost gave up after failing to succeed, but at those times you reminded me of Randy Pausch’s quote and things finally began to sink in. I sure am thankful that I didn’t give up!
I hope that many of the newer marketers take comfort in the fact that even the most successful people don’t make the shot every time.
The video does sum it up perfectly.
Thanks for your kind words too.

Follow-up on the video, I read that MJ didn’t make the high school BB team his 1st year, he practiced day and night after that, the rest is history.

Hi Josh!
First time to post on your blog. Won’t be the last. Failure has been my constant unwelcome companion over the past so many years. But failure has kept me always looking out for better ways to do things. While necessity may be the mother of all inventions, failure is the teacher that hones all inventions into perfection.

[...] And speaking of early supporters, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Internet Marketer Josh Spaulding (I actually built the first version of his blog!) and one of his biggest commentators back then, [...]

To err is human, we learn from our mistakes… really enjoyed reading this article and watching the video!

Josh-
Heck of great post.
I, like alot of others, suffer from “paralysis by analysis”. It’s hard to get your head wrapped around the concept that failure is not only inevitable, but necessary as a learning mechanism in this game.
I appreciate the candor and honesty in your writing. Very encouraging without sounding like one of those inspirational posters!
I hate those….. ha ha
Thanks, Andy

I definitely agree that failure is a part of success. This is especially true with internet marketing. Take PPC for example. Sometimes you have to spend a good amount of money before you find just the right keywords and products to promote.
The most successful internet marketers I have seen are the ones who keep trying.

Josh -
I love that message. I actually have the Michael Jordan poster that says this same thing hanging in my home office.
Jordan was once quoted saying he’s no longer afraid to take game winning shots because after having missed one, there was no longer a fear of the unknown. As in not knowing how badly he’d feel or how angry his fans or teammates would be at him.
Once he realized it wasn’t as bad as he feared he was able to confidently take the last shot. The same can be said in business. If you’ve tasted both success and failure, there’s no longer any fear of the unknown. Fear is a big barrier to success, and once that’s knocked down, the sky is the limit.

Wow, does this article make sense or what. I’ve been online for several years and while I have had my fair share of successes, I have too have some failures along the way. Nonetheless, if you really want to make things happen for yourself then you need to hang in there to make it can happen. Excuses Begone. Kudos on your blog post.

Hey Josh,
I think most everyone hears this little piece of advice their whole life.
This goes back to your other article about “The Herd” mentality. If you’re a leader you are constantly trying things and failing at them. It’s OK to fail at something as long as you learn from it and move forward. Unfortunately most will only have to fail a few times before they just pack it in and quit.
That’s the first time I’ve seen this video and I think it’s great. Of course I have to point out one thing for you. Michael Jordan is unequivocally the best basketball player of all time. Lebron is great but he can’t even hold Jordan’s jock strap. (SORRY!)

@ Jeff – I agree with everything except that crazy last paragraph lol Jordan is almost as good as LeBron though, I’ll give you that

Its a great commercial.
I think everybody knows failure as concept. The true bravery is in realising when it strikes you.
Just do not loose heart.
