My Internet Marketing History from Then to Now

April 1st, 2008 | 31 comments

Josh SpauldingIn response to Ryan’s request derived from my last post where I asked “What do you want me to talk about, I’ve composed a video for you.

Ryan asks “what would you do if you were just starting out right now — knowing what you know now.”

My answer - I would start a blog (brand my name,) start a mailing list and build a reputation in the process. HOWEVER, I don’t think that answer will help alot of people, because if you’re just starting out you don’t have the knowledge to do most of that.

Instead of going into detail on that, I decided to show you exactly what I’ve done in the past 4 years of running my online business. In this video I give you a walk-through of my business from day one when I created my first Website to now; what projects I have coming up.

I’m a horrible speaker and this was unscripted, so forgive me for my lack of speaking skills ;)

    Josh,

Great insight into how you became who you are. Thanks for the video. What is your opinion of video blogging? I personally think it is the next big thing.

    Hi Joe,

    Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

I think video blogging and online video in general is becoming huge.

SE’s are delivering more and more video in their results and people seem to be liking it.

My problem is my horrible speaking skills :)

Eventually I’ll tune them and start video blogging from time to time as well.

    Josh,

I couldn’t agree more about blogging and online video becoming huge. It is only natural for them to come together and be the next big thing.

I am sure you will be much better in future videos, I was nervous while doing some of my first seminars a few years ago. It gets easier and you become much more confident in your presentation as time goes on.

    Hi Josh

Thanks for the video, interesting to hear how you did it. Also good to hear from someonre who seems “real” for a change.

As a newbie I appreciate your comments on how hard it is to find and focus on a business model!

What do you recommend as a frequency to send out a newsletter?

    Thanks

Very interesting and very honest. I can tell you a a very sincere person and you are going to do quite well for yourself in the years to come. Keep up the good work. I don’t think that you could have picked a better person to immulate than Jon Leger. I look forward to getting his information all the time, so you are on the right track. You mentoring site is going to do great, I can just feel it. You seem to be a good person and I hope that everything works out for you the way that you want it to.
Thanks and keep up the good work,

    Josh,

Great video. It is always interesting to here how other internet marketers have started out in business. Your story is very inspiring.

As someone who has both your latest free report and Article Marketing Domination I can attest to the fact that the information you give out is very good.

    Thanks again.

@ Vince - Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :) I probably send out broadcasts too much, but I never send out more than 2 a week. I’m trying VERY hard to only send out one a week, but that’s hard when you REALLY want to tell people something.

I would recommend a mailer per week.

@ Steve - Thanks for the compliments. I’ll be announcing my coaching program very soon!

@ Kitwana - Thanks for the compliments and support. I’m glad you enjoyed both products!

    MISTER Josh,

I enjoyed what I got to see of it. I had to restart from the beginning after getting halfway thru and having to break for a few minutes.

I’d really recommend that you put these things up on YouTube. Labeled properly, you get a chance to reach a lot more people…AND some of us could go vouch for you there to build your credibility.

@ Chuck - Yeah, that’s the problem with these videos; if your settings aren’t just right they will crash etc.

I put my videos (the few that I’ve done) on YouTube, but there is a 10 minute max (I belive) so longer videos like this can’t be posted there.

I could have probably put it up on Revver or something similar though…you’re right.

Thanks for sharing your online history Josh.

It is interesting to see that so many people succeed doing what everyone knows and yet so many people fail (97%) trying to find that on emagic bullet, that one thing that nobody else knows, that one trick or secret (supposedly).

I’d also be interested to see the kind of traffic you can generate form the techniques you focus on.

    Thanks again

    Hey Josh

First off, you could improve your voice by having users watch the video on Internet Explorer! Ha, seriously though…the current version of Camtasia has a bug that causes weird sounds (like Alvin and the Chipmunks talking, etc.) when being played on Mozilla.

Just giving you an excuse for your speaking voice ;) The content you provide far outweighs how you speak which really is not bad so don’t worry.

I appreciate you walking through an overview of your business. Not many people (internet marketers) would expose themselves in public like you did and the numbers you gave for your income are very reasonable and seem achievable for everyone….if they do as you say which is to build a real business.

I liked how you stressed that there are many ways to make money online. One thing many “gurus” don’t like to mention is that experience is one of the most important things, and in your walkthrough you talked about how you “wasted” your time, then took it back and said no wait..it’s not a waste because I learned something.

That’s the point. Everyone needs to experience and learn for themselves. You can study alllllll you want and not learn until you try. I’m guilty of that too so I appreciate when I see marketers to the IM crowd like yourself who I believe truly want to help people.

    Kudos man!

    Mark

    Josh

I forgot to mention in my last post …

I have an awful lot of experience with presentations …

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with your voice. It may sound weired to you and that’s partly because you believe you are not a natural speaker … even if that’s true, still there’s nothing wrong with your voice.

Two simple suggesttions to get you better results:

1- Do use a script or at least a cue card. No matter how good anyone is at speaking, streamlining and structuring a presentation always helps the audience and therefore the end result overall.

2- Standing up when doing presentations even if it is a teleseminar (when no one can see you), injects a little more energy into your presentation.

And you will get that subtle boost to your voice … it becomes more commanding, more convincing and more authoritative.

Great presentation from the heart. The slightly distorted audio on /foxfire was not you, it was the software. I am just getting in to video myself for my blog and do realize that this is not something that you become a professional overnight.

You have a great blog and do offer fantastic information to the novice.

Keep up the good work. It is appreciated.

    Hi Josh,

Great little video and thanks so much for the kind words and free advertising :-)

I thought your speaking voice was fine (Firefox blips aside and same problem as Chuck after pausing) and I admire your readiness to be open about your achievements and methods - even though I knew you were already.

Of all the blogs I read, yours gets priority. I remember back in the early days of your blog and meeting up with you - via Bumpzee I believe and it’s been great to watch you grow the site so successfully.

I know you’ve given me some great free advice in our many email conversations and if that’s the kind of deal you’re offering from the membership site, I’d say it will be a great place for beginners and more experienced people alike.

    Josh,
That was a nice overview of your online IM career.
I look forward to your membership forum. Although, I promised myself that I wouldn’t spend anymore money on IM products until I made more money. :-)
However, being a customer of your products, I know from first hand experience how much you believe in delivering quality products and customer service.
So, my next question is, will there be an affiliate program for the membership site?
    All the best,
    Bridget

    Thanks Josh.

Hearing the real story from someone is very helpful.

Personally I prefer text - I can scan and then find what is of interest much more quickly than with video. So, if you can give a transcript as well, this would be better for me. (So, personally, I hope that video doesn’t become the next thing - or it it does that it also becomes usual to provide transcripts.)

    Hey Josh,

Thanks so much for the video.

Its *brutally* honest and I can tell that it took a lot of hardwork to get to where you are today.

I can imagine you in the beginning, when you first got started and actually planned and mapped out all your niche websites with adsense. Then finally, then something worked you realised that it could be something others could benefit too.

Josh, I’m going to make some major changes in my business this year because of the many advises from you and from AMD and also from other marketers.

So, trust me when I say that your video is a great video and nice as an introduction for just about anyone out there wanting to start a real business online.

That said, I’m prepared and looking forward to the membership forum bro. By the way, do you need help in running the forum? ;)

Let me know if you need any help in anyway. I’ll be glad to lend a hand.

    Cheers,
    Vern

    Hi Josh,

Well done on the video. It was really interesting to hear how you began.

(A similar story to mine with the military background).

I totally agree that having your own product(s) and a solid way to grow your opt-in list is a sure fire way to become successful.

I started a similar internet marketing blog last year and spend my time branding my name and giving away good, free content.

Having your own product is a must and not nearly as difficult as anyone might presume.

I really enjoy reading your blog entries and you are one of just a few internet marketers I keep tabs on (Jon Leger being another!).

Keep up the great work and good luck with the mentoring program..I’ll be especially keen to see how that works out!!

    Cheers,

Josh, I like that picture of your office. I’m going to go to two screens as soon as I grow up on the Internet. I’m still a pup! I think the only thing that would make your picture of the office any better would be if you we’re wearing a JustaKrusen Sweat shirt. :) Or a tee shirt would do. I’m justa saying!

@ Sami - The ones that succeed normally find that “magic bullet” by realizing that there is no secret. It’s all out there in the open, it just takes effort and the average person tends to ignore things that take a whole lot of effort, whether they realize it or not. I know I did for a long time.

All of my sites combined including all of the indirect traffic generators I would guess generate somewhere around 10,000 uniques a day. That is just a guess. I’ve never added them all up and I’m sure that figure fluctuates considerably from day to day.

Thanks for the speaking advice :) I’ve heard it before, but never implemented it. I’ll try that next time.

@ Mark - I noticed the chipmunk effect on my system, didn’t realize it was FF so thanks for that!

Thanks for the other compliments as well. The forum link will be announced soon. Working out some issues with aMember right now…hopefully they get on the ball…fast!

@ Neil - Thanks for the compliments :)

@ Mo - No problem at all. You’re a good guy and you’ve been a great support over the past year. Thanks for the compliments as well.

@ Bridget - That promise to yourself is a good one as long as it doesn’t hold you back. I’ve personally never invested in coaching, so I could never criticize anyone for not choosing to do so. I’m not 100% sure about the affiliate program right now. The reason being - The site will be capped off at 100 initially and I don’t believe I’ll have any trouble reaching that. If I ever do put up an affiliate program I will certainly announce it!

@ Evan - I’ve heard the video/text controversy in the past. Alot of people prefer text while many prefer video. If I ever release a paid product with video I’ll definitely release transcripts along with it. For now free products with video probably won’t come along with transcripts, unfortunately.

@ Ryan Cote - Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

@ Ryan - No problem at all. Hopefully you got a little traffic from it as well.

@ Vern - You’ve go it ;) I believe you’ll do well. I know you’re very determined! Good luck with it all. Looking forward to seeing you in the forum!

@ Peter - I definitely agree. Especially the part about product creation not being as dificult as many believe. I actually started a blog post series showing how to do that…I need to get that series finished.

@ Mark - haha You don’t have to “Grow up.” Save up a couple hundred dollars for an extra monitor and split-port graphics card and you have yourself an extended desktop. I installed the second monitor a few months ago and LOVE It. I can get SO much more done now.

@ Anthony - Glad you enjoyed it. Yep, trust is a major factor. Unfortunately so many people believe it’s quantity that counts. Putting out loads of webpages dones’t necessarily mean sales.

    Hey Josh,

I use Amember for my niche membership site.

I had a guy from RentaCoder sort it all out for me because it blew my mind trying to set up!

He knows the software inside out and is very quick. He’s from Germany and speaks excellent English.

Let me know if you get stuck and need a reliable expert to help you out in double quick time!

    He’s been excellent for me.

@ Peter - I just may take you up on that offer. aMember “guarantees” 24 hours installation and after 2 days they haven’t replied to my ticket or said one word to me.

I’m seriously thinking about requesting a refund and advising my list of their “support.”

Anyhow, if I do decide to stick with them I’d be interested in your contact. My wife is German as well, so that’s cool :)

    No worries.

I must admit the admin panel is really easy to use once it is set up and I’ve had no problems with it at all.

I would stick with it personally because I’m sure you’ll be happy with it once it is in place.

Drop me a line if you need that contact.

    Hey Josh

I use a great affiliate software called Post Affiliate Pro (PAP) by a company called Quality Unit.

The same company also makes a great membership software called Post Member Pro (PMP - http://PostMemberPro.com).

PAP is affiliate software with some relevant membership capabilities built in while PMP is membership software with some relevant affiliate capabilities built in.

    *** NOTE ***
They install for you free. And to date (last 3 months) I have always got prompt responses from their support, sometimes in as little as half an hour.

They also have a great affiliate program (75% commission I think). I am an affiliate but the above link is a direct link for you and all my new friends on your site.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Josh,

Thanks. You know this means a lot to me when it comes from someone like you. In fact, it took me like 1.7 years to figure out that its all in the planning and massive execution of the business mindset type.

I’m still nervous and going to put some work on a product idea of mine soon. So, with things kicking into the high gear for me, I’m gonna need loads of advise from you as I go along.

With that said, of course I’ll see you in the forum.
