Why Most Internet Marketing Gurus are Full of it

August 23rd, 2007 | 2 comments

I never have and never will claim to be a guru, at least your typical Internet Marketing guru and this is why:

Your typical Internet Marketing (IM) Guru makes 90% of his/her money from the products that they’re selling YOU! That means the majority of their money comes from product sales, not by the thousands of “Break-through, will make you rich” strategies they speak of in their products.

Is all the info in these products total BS? In most cases, no, it’s not. My point is, their specialty is finding hot niches inside the IM community that have problems that need solved. They do their research and the fruits of their labor is usually decent info. BUT, in most cases it’s missing a key ingredient, experience!

I remember, a few months back, buying an SEO product from someone who I’ve heard referred to as a “Guru.” I read the ebook and although it had some good info, I was amazed as to how many double-standards this guy had.

I visited a couple of his Websites and within 30 seconds I found several SEO flaws that weren’t killing him, but were definitely hurting him. Being curious, I just looked again and low and behold, neither of the sites have changed, the flaws are still there.

My point is, many of the true Gurus are those you have never heard of, or you’ve heard little about. They are the ones working behind the scenes, raking in loads of money.

I’m not an expert in every aspect of IM. I have a basic knowledge of just about every aspect and an advanced knowledge of some. I’m always learning through reading and testing.

It’s funny to see how every new thing I become proficient in, reveals holes in the info I “learned” previously from a “Guru.”

However, there are things to learn from these guys if you want to target that niche and I do consider it a niche in itself. Internet Marketing Gurus compete in a niche of it’s own. That niche is creating and marketing products through newsletters.

This niche requires alot of knowledge in copyrighting, autoresponders and info product creation and It’s a profitable one.

If you want to eventually become an Internet Marketing Guru, then keep buying those products and keep subscribing to those newsletters.

If your niche is blogging, niche marketing or otherwise, then I suggest looking for authority blogs and Websites in those niches. You’ll find much better info and in most cases it’s absolutely free!

Good post Josh. I’m starting a business dedicated to helping real estate agents spot SEO Charlatans. I’m reading two books a week at the moment. You speak a lot of sense. Have you seen http://www.seobullshit.com. Very funny! See the term “SEO Disco” from the song “It’s raining links……….” by the weathergirls. “You’re having an SEO disco mate!” should have been my reply to some of the people who have ripped me off in the past.

Great points Josh! I believe that this is a carryover from the pre world wide web days of chain letters and envelope stuffing opportunities. Back then I quickly figured out that the income from those opportunities came primarily from those buying these opportunities. It appears that this is still the case but the web allows this process to be hyper accelerated.
