I think often going after the bigger volume keywords gets you to show up for some of the other keywords accidentally.

If you put enough pages out there with as Josh recommends "valuable information" and they are all linked together eventually you get ranked for keywords you weren't going after.

In looking at what words my traffic has been coming from I have found I rank for some words I had not even thought of. I have gone in and built pages to go after those terms and it has worked well.

Love your post. Can't stop reading and commenting. Hope you don't mind.

Your blog really provides me valuable and important informations especially this one. I always told my friends don't go and listen to those "gurus" who rank for those funny keywords which have no traffic.

They simply don't believe me. Reading this post give me lots of confidence and thank you for showing to others too.

Thanks and I'm looking for you next post.

Sorry it took so long to reply to this Caroline and thanks for the link love. This is something many people would argue, but my opinion is that many people target keywords that are just too "long tail." I guess it all depends on your technique, but I've always done better with keywords that aren't HUGE, but that have a decent amount of search volume.

Your last point is interesting. I've recently been trying to rank for fairly low traffic / low competition pages and I have got to around position #12 with most of them but they bring very little traffic. Perhaps instead of worrying about ranking higher, I should see if I could target higher traffic phrases and still get to a similar position in the rankings as that would ultimately bring in more traffic.
