Free Site Review - Just Leave a Comment

I’ve always believed that reviews add value to any blog if done correctly. What I don’t believe in is doing paid reviews that require a “gleaming” review.

I’ve never done a single paid review on this blog, although I may in the future if it’s on my terms. I have done a few site and product reviews that were not paid though because they provide value and I like to help people out when I can, either by sending traffic to an awesome service/product/site/blog or giving advice on how one can improve.

Today I’d like to offer 5 people the chance to get their blog reviewed by me for absolutely nothing in return. The review will be completely honest, but it will not be brutal. I never have and never will degrade a person or site that is honestly trying to do the right thing.

This can be any of the following:

1. A blog
2. A salespage
3. A written product less than 40 pages
4. A static website

All you have to do is leave a comment that states “Count me in Josh” + whatever else you want to say. Just insert a link to whatever it is you want reviewed in the comment field as shown below:

Sometime around the end of the week ending Nov. 23, 2007 I’ll choose 5 at random. The reviews will be spread out over the next 30 days, the first being shortly after I make my decision.

I may even choose more than 5, who knows I never know how many comments a post will get, but you never know, there may only be 5 comments, meaning that all 5 would be guaranteed a review.

Actually, I already have a blog up but
its still in its very infancy stage.

I’ve been doing free blog reviews on OpTempo since I started it in October. I’ve done 14 so far and I have 5 or 6 in the queue. I try to space them out about every 6-8 posts. It’s worked pretty well so far.

Don’t count me in, Josh…not because I don’t think it’s a great idea…I do. It’s just that I’d rather see someone else get the attention (thus, the lack of a web link for me this time around). But I might also suggest that you (or someone else) consider an “eyes of the peeps” contest. In fact, I think someone could build a hell of a blog around this idea…and I’m not even gonna charge you for it.

How about this. Every day, couple days, twice a week, once a week, or whatever…post a list of blogs/sites. It could be anywhere between 3 and 10, I think. It would be wise for the moderator to experiment and find out what works for everyone.

The idea would be for the moderator to do just that…play “editor” about which sites are really worth a look. Otherwise…you’re just asking for this opportunity to be another excuse to get spammed. But if you allow folks to email you with their site URL and request review consideration, you’d pick which ones are good enough to rate entry into the process. If you reject them, you can write them back and tell them that they’re not quite where they need to be yet and give them some specific criticism.

So how does the site concept work? The cool thing is that it’s not powered by you. “The peeps” (your blog readers) look thru the sites and vote somehow (probably a poll mechanism that you’d install) and they comment on things they really liked or really didn’t about certain sites out of those listed.

So the content is created by your site visitors. You do a little moderation, you earn traffic, you have a valuable reason to exist and people visit your site because they can contribute and they are adding some extra link value (the same reason they comment on your site now).

And, since I’m not pimping for a review, I’ll add my thoughts on some of the sites listed above (I visited them all…which is what gave me this idea in the first place).

Josh Dockery would win for most appealing design
Marco Richter for best content
David (xfep) for the one I think I’d want to visit again soonest
and Vern’s squeeze page for the one you couldn’t pay me enough to visit again (squeeze pages must die, Die, DIE!!)

Anyway…it’s just an idea. I’m tellin’ ya…this is a heck of a lot more interesting than another “blogging about blogging” blog or another “I made 50 cents today…wanna hear how?” blog.

This kind of service is bound to get you extra traffic (if you keep it up). I’ve been thinking about doing this myself (from a more technical perspective than most reviews). I’ll probably do it one day…

I am in, I have tried to get people to give me an honest review of my site and I have had many visitors but nobody said anything.
I take it means “it sucks” hahaha, still I am starting to get visitors submissions so I guess at least it works
