5 Questions about the Online Josh Spaulding
November 12th, 2007 | 14 commentsI was just tagged by Caroline for a meme called “5 Questions About the Online You,” which was created by Heather Masson.
Although I recently commented somewhat negatively and provided my new thoughts on memes at Stephen’s blog, I’m going to take part in this one, as the questions are some that I want to answer publicly anyway and I’m a reader of both Caroline’s blog and Heather’s blog.
The “Online” me:
1. How long have you been blogging?
I started this blog in March of this year, but didn’t get serious with it until about 4 months ago. However, I’ve been marketing online now for approximately 3 years.
2. What inspired you to start a blog and who are your mentors?
That’s a tough one. I didn’t really get inspired all of the sudden. It was something that I knew was effective for quite some time, but never got around to it, as I had many other ventures going on with my online business and being in the Army at the time didn’t help matters either.
A few people who I look up to are:
3. Are You trying to make money online, or just doing it for fun?
Both. The first year was a learning experience. I lost more money than I made, but I had fun doing it
The second year I made a little profit and still had alot of fun and this year I’ve finally reached the light. I’m still under 6 figures, but I have a hell of a good time doing it all. I haven’t “worked” since May 31st 2007 (my last day in the Army.)
4. Tell me 3 things you LOVE about being online.
5. Tell me 3 things you STRUGGLE with in the online world.
Who I’m tagging
I’m going to tag a few people for this meme. If you’re tagged, but don’t want to take part I can assure you I won’t be offended
If I double-tag someone, my apologies, just ignore.

This is a good first post for someone to read. I’ m new to your blog but it was good getting some insight into the author right away. Happy Veteran’s Day from one vet to another (Navy here).

Cool! Thanks for taking part Josh, nice to know you’re one of the ‘real’ ones who is actually making some money!

I’m not a fan of memes either, for the most part, Josh. However, I think this kind of thing that helps you learn a bit about someone is, nonetheless, quite interesting.
For instance, I bought your ebook months back and have been reading this blog for quite awhile now, but only learned in the last week or 10 days that you’d been in the service.
So I say that this meme, at least, deserves a thumbs up. Glad you participated and to Caroline for tagging you.
And I think it would be cool if the standard for blogs was always to include more info about the blogger…including a pic and some legitimate info. Instead, an About page often becomes an excuse for one or two cute quips and that’s about it.
>> Keeping negativity to myself - At times I think it’s good to speak your mind,
>> but I have a baaaad habit of opening my mouth before thinking.
I can relate. I obviously have issues with the ethics of internet marketing in the way that it’s currently defined by the average i-marketer…and I spend too much time explaining why to those who probably couldn’t care less. But the fact is…that’s more of a ME problem than anything else. Often, it would be more profitable for me to just shut up and get back to work.

@ Sess, great, I guess the meme is more “user friendly” than most
blogsmemes. I hope you had a good veterans day as well, thanks. btw, 2 more comments and your links will get some PR@ Caroline, no problem. My problem is that much of that income is not recurring. My main focus right now is building residual income online. I have months where my online income is upwards of 4k, but I also have months when I’m lucky to hit 1k. Because of that I don’t consider myself “extremely successful” yet. That’s also why you won’t see me stating my monthly online income. It would be wrong for me to pick a high month and give the perception that I make 4k/month every month when the next month could very well be under 1k. At the same time, if I do it on a bad month, I wouldn’t want everyone thinking I’m a hypocrite that doesn’t make much
@ Chuck, yeah I think most memes are created with the sole intention of gaining links and not necessarily for user experience. You’re right about this meme though, glad you enjoyed it. I got out of the military May 31st of this year as a SGT promotable. I was stationed in Germany the entire five years, where I met my wife Claudia.
I like the idea of some quick info about the blogger right away as well. This theme does that. It’s just hard to decide how much of that real estate to use. I don’t wan to use too much of it, but then again, I’d like to provide a little more info that what I do provide up there.
I do the same damn thing with my rants
especially in forums! Man, if I knew exactly how much time I spent on forums arguing and “ranting” I’d probably faint! I like to speak my mind, but I do think I go too far and waste far too much time being negative. It’s something I really need to work on!

Thanks Josh,
I’m working on it now. Interesting links, although I think RT dislikes memes
Always a good read, thanks for the insights.

No problem Maurice. I know many people dislike memes, that’s why I made sure to add the following:
If he doesn’t that’s fine, I’m not too worried about it
I wanted to send some link love his way anyway.
Looking forward to your post.
Thanks

Yeah, I know, I was just “joshin’” ya

Hey Josh thanks for tagging me - it’s a timely reminder I was supposed to do this after being tagged originally by Heather heh! I’ll get on it today.
It’s always great to know more about the good guys like yourself and knowing that someone else struggles with graphics as well
Don’t you just wonder how those Photoshoppers come up with stuff?!
12th November, 2007 at 11:48 pm
YC, It was about 5 minutes after I posted this when i realized that Heather tagged you from the beginning lol Sorry about that. I guess I should add “failure to investigate things” to the “weakness” list.
Yeah, Photoshop is like rocket science to me! I don’t care what anyone says, you have to be pretty intelligent to really understand everything PhotoShop can do!
I’ll stick to marketing and continue to outsource those things

Josh, thanks for the link at the beginning. Actually the UnMeme concept is not mine, it’s RT’s! Interesting read. 1K - 4K? I hope it stays closer to 4K for you, but I can only look on in envy! I’ve made about $37 in total! Actually I can do more than look on in envy, can’t I? I should start following some of your examples!

Interesting that you were in Germany. I am actually in Belgium right now. My husband is still active duty.
13th November, 2007 at 4:25 pm
Stephen, wow, it looks like there are alot of obvious things I missed lol I linked to your “unmeme” post, which links to RT’s “unmeme” post (I even commented on it) and then I tagged RT for a meme
I’m a genius. The 1k-4k is through Adsense, WSO’s at the Warrior forum, product sales and some affiliate sales, but not many. I make very little money from this blog. I think that’s where alot of people mess up. They concentrate solely on their blog. Blogs can be big money makers, but like anything else it takes alot of time and patience. I prefer to diversify
@ SES, yep, we’ll be back in Frankfurt on vacation from the 28th of Nov to the 13th of Dec. I’ve been all over Europe, but still haven’t made it over to Belgium although I’d like to.

Hi Josh,
Just to say nice blog you have. I found your blog from SitePoint, and glad you are one of those that still believe in article marketing.
I also believe in article marketing, but I don’t write that much…if I do, I usually post them to only a few major articles directories, that’s all. I do decent in Photoshop (studied it before) and know some PHP, but ….wish I could take the time off to learn more coding stuff.
Been online for close to 2 years, but built my 1st website in Geocities back in 2002, now just learning and doing like everyone else.
