Firefox Endorsing Plugin that Blocks all Ads!
September 4th, 2007 | One commentI just opened John Andrew’s Blog, a blog I recently started reading and was surprised to see it redirected to a page stating that:
the site you were trying to visit now blocks the FireFox browser
…
The Mozilla Foundation and its Commercial arm, the Mozilla Corporation, has allowed and endorsed Ad Block Plus, a plug-in that blocks advertisement on web sites and also prevents site owners from blocking people using it.
The above is quoted from http://whyfirefoxisblocked.com/index1.php (the site that John’s blog is redirecting to when viewed with FireFox.)
The first thought that came to mind was, is this guy crazy?? He’s losing out on loads of traffic. Then I thought
1. It’s link bait.
2. He’s standing up for a GREAT cause!!!
3. Just about everyone has IE, so most will just open up IE and view the blog their.
I personally love Firefox for their plugins. But, after reading what you’ll read by visiting his blog, I now have a completely different view of them.
One thing that comes to mind is the fact that Google endorses FireFox in their Adsense Referral program. Obviously Google doesn’t want anyone blocking ads because it’s their main money-maker. So, by FireFox endorsing this new plugin that blocks ads, they are crossing a very fine line with, most likely, their biggest endorser.
I haven’t looked too much into the plugin in question, but from the sounds of it, it’s total BS!!
As Webmasters, we provide free information to help others. Although many of us would love to, we can’t continue to provide free content without some sort of profit. If something like this went viral with the average Joe, the quality of the Internet would drastically decrease!
