Google’s Worst Nightmare May Come True
February 1st, 2008 | 10 comments
According to WebProNews Microsoft, the world’s largest Software Company and one of the Worlds largest Search and online advertising companies, has offered $44.6 Billion to obtain Yahoo!
No word yet (that I’ve heard) whether or not they’ve accepted or denied, but if it were to happen Google may need to up their game in various avenues.
Yahoo and MSN are Google’s most serious competition. I’m no financial expert, but it seems to me that if the two combined that would equal some serious trouble for Google.
If it happens I see it as a good thing. It would weaken Google’s monopoly and give us more options and competition between companies is always good for the consumer
What do you think?

Hi Josh,
I saw this blurb ont he news a little while ago too. I’m not so sure I’d call it Google’s “worst nightmare”, so much as Microsoft’s “best hope” (of competing with Google on the Internet).
In any case, I agree with you that anything that give Google a bit of competition has to be considered a good thing.

Yeah I’ve been seeing it all over the place now as well. Curious to see what happens.

I don’t think this is as big of a threat to Google as everyone is making it sound. Google invested heavily in mobile applications and web-based products. Yahoo was primarily news oriented and a lot of their services will overlap with Microsoft. They both have search, e-mail, etc., but they don’t have as much to offer in the web-based software areas, which is the future.
I’m not saying its a waste of money by Microsoft, I’m just saying that I don’t think Google will be vary threatened because they have better positioned themselves for the future.

It’s just wishful thinking on my part. You make some good points and to be honest with you I don’t know much at all about the internal workings of any of the companies.
Can’t we just dream about the possibilities?

Well, Google can do no evil as far as I’m concerned, but I just think Microsoft didn’t do a good job investing in the future (or some might argue they were held hostage by the demands of making Windows software everyone can use).
Microsoft was smart to branch off into gaming and other areas because they’ve made very bad choices in the other areas.

I think in general Google is a good, ethical company. But I see alot of hypocrisies like their latest link buying thing. The idea makes sense. Buying links decreases quality, as anyone can push any trash site to the top with a little money. However, their methods of policing it is extremely unfair and wrong. If I wanted to get technical, like many have in detail, I could find LOADS of sites that sell links in one way or another, which haven’t been affected in the least bit.
I guess the impact this will have, if it happens, will depend on what they decide to focus on. If they decide to focus on search and advertising, which I don’t see why they wouldn’t, I do think they’re give Google a run for their money.
But, like I said, I don’t know much at all about any of the companies internal affairs. You seem to know much more about them than I, so I’ll take your word for it

I really don’t know what to think about this yet.
Yahoo and Microsoft are both companies that just don’t deliver, in my view. Will a stronger combined force be better? Will they innovate? Not sure.
I hardly think Google is quaking in their boots. It’s not like Microsoft is “close, but just losing the race”. They’re WAY behind, at least based on the areas I’ve noticed.

I can’t see it as being much of a threat to Google, to tell you the truth. When I look in my logs, every search engine other than Google combined don’t add up to the total searches from Google. We’ll see. I fear that what it will wind up being is a truly one player game - Google. MS has a way of screwing up everything it touches…

Yahoo and Microsoft may prove to be more able together than they have been separate but that is not certain. I don’t think this is Google’s biggest risk though. I think mistakes they make themselves are the biggest threat to there success not anything other do.

This turned out to be one of those instances where I wonder if I thought before I posted it
After seeing related news, hearing your thoughts and rethinking the whole thing, I agree, Google probably doesn’t have much to worry about!!
