The “Secret” to Driving Traffic and Succeeding

January 23rd, 2008 | 16 comments

Knowledge is Power How many products, blog posts etc. have you seen that offered the “Secret” to wealth or the “Secret” to server crashing traffic?

Those of us who know better, know that although all of these “secrets” may not be scams, 99.9% of them do not offer any kind of secret.

Most of us know that there really isn’t any kind of secret. The absolute only thing that will make you rich (unless you win the lottery or get a big inheritance) is Knowledge!

This is really something that shouldn’t need to be mentioned. I mean, it should be common sense. But, the average Internet Marketer is constantly asking how to get more traffic.

Short-cuts don’t work. There may be some that will increase your traffic in the short-term, but if your content isn’t worth their time they aren’t going to come back.

So What is the “Secret” to Traffic Generation?

Know more about your sites topic than the average visitor!

That’s it! You don’t even have to insert a special line of markup into your pages or sign up for a $1,000 course. All you have to do is research and learn!!

How many “my journey to making money online” blogs have you seen rise to the top? I could name a hand-full and those were done by people who had already been making money. So why don’t these blogs ever see success? Because they didn’t teach their average visitor anything. If I want to make money, why would I want to follow someone who isn’t making any? It just doesn’t make sense!

On the other hand, if I want to make money and you’re making more than me and regularly share your knowledge I’ll subscribe in a heart beat and read every single word you put out!

So the next time you think to yourself “damn, my blog doesn’t get any traffic,” think about what you have to offer! Do you honestly know more about your sites topic than your average site visitor? If not, are you providing them with something they can at least use? or are you just putting on a show, like so many others? Acting doesn’t work in this industry and those who realize that are the ones who make the money!

As with anything else online or offline, knowledge really is the key!

Allow me to express my skepticism on that. Knowledge (and consequently high quality content) is not the only key. If you don’t socialize, promote interaction and be on top of the news, chances are you’ll get lost in the blogosphere.

    Hey Robo,

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that. Granted, socializing, promoting interaction and being on top of the news definitely helps, knowledge is the primary factor.

That’s not to say someone who is extremely knowledge on their site/blog topic shouldn’t socialize and use other means of promotion though.

My main purpose with this post is to drive in the fact that you’re not going to get all that traffic you dream of if you aren’t extremely knowledgeable on the subject.

-edit- If you’re producing quality, well-informed content that social traffic and interaction is going to come naturally. I participate in VERY little social media. I do very little to promote interaction and this blog and several other sites I own generate a good deal of traffic. The more I learn the more I’ll have to share. The more I have to share the more traffic I’ll get in one way or another.

I can see your point for blogs, or like news sites… it’s a bit of a differant case when you’re running an affilaite or “for-adsense” site… Vic always talks about NOT giving people what they want so they will click your ads… pretty much eliminates return traffic… but still

    Hey Stock,

That’s a true statement. In fact I wrote about that exact point in a post on link-building a little while back.

I hope you’re right Josh cuz that’s the exact method I’ve started to implement. I’ll let you know in a few months how it all works out. :-)

Just wanted to add in reply to Robo comment: I do agree with Josh because what you want to do is NOT to submit your site to web 2.0 sites!

You want to get other people to submit it for you WITHOUT asking them anything just because they like your content.

It’s strange, but nobody speaks about this! Everybody talk about spamming your link, creating zillions account and they are happy with this!

Strange stuff this Internet… Nothing logical at all!

    Franck the body guard.

I agree with you Franck. High quality content is in the end the key. But do you really think that if you write quality content without socializing, will bring your work to the masses?
By socializing I don’t explicitly mean using web 2.0 sites (digg, mixx, etc) but also creating a connection with other blogs. Giving trackback, writing comments, connecting with your readers, etc.

Making different blogs for the same product and speaking about the product differently
will generate you a good traffic.

I think this is the first post here that I’ve really disagreed with. I think that knowledge is an important prerequisite, and I’ve seen very few sites that do well in the long-run without a solid knowledge base - but I don’t think knowledge alone will cut it unless you’re in a really uncompetitive field. Something has to get your name out there, unless you’re working with an extremely long time frame for success.

    Hi Ginger,

Thanks for stopping by. I probably should have phrased this post a bit better. Obviously we can’t just post good content and expect it to bring it traffic automatically. Many times we need to “jump-start” out starts. My main point is that many people just don’t understand why they’re not getting any traffic and when you look at their site(s) there is no value.

I think the biggest problem is that people start sites/blogs on niches that they don’t have much knowledge on expecting to get loads of traffic and when that traffic doesn’t magically appear they don’t know what they did wrong.

    Josh,

IMHO there are some other peakpoints driving the traffic as well:

    - decent spelling
    - the right „tune“ in expression
    - a good understanding for quality and design
    - a good sense of humor

Most important over all is to intrigue the readers making them curious about »what comes next« :)

That way they come back … even without “newsletter” …

    Kind regards
and thanks for your hints ;)

Content is the key for returning traffic. You can get high ranking via links etc. but ultimatly content is what perople are there for. most people think getting high rankin means sales not so.
i deal witj the trade show industry and I can alweays get your trace show booth crowed with visitors, hire hot modesl etc, but does this convert to sales? In most cases no. You have to have a good product and or content.
its the same thing with websiets and or bloggs. Good ideas and or product content are the key
